In the event that a hydrogen bomb is going to be detonated near my area, I would follow these steps to maximize my safety and that of my family:
Stay Informed: Immediately tune into reliable news sources via radio, television, or online for official updates and instructions from authorities.
Find Shelter Immediately: Seek shelter indoors as quickly as possible. The best choice would be a basement or an interior room away from windows to minimize exposure to the blast and radiation. If outdoors, seek the deepest cover available, such as underground parking garages or subways.
Seal the Shelter: Once inside, close all windows and doors, and use plastic sheeting and duct tape to seal any openings to prevent radioactive particles from entering. Stay away from exterior walls and roofs, which offer the least protection.
Prepare an Emergency Kit: Ensure your emergency kit is ready, containing essentials like water, non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, flashlights, batteries, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, and personal medications.
Stay Safe from Fallout: If initial shelter does not provide long-term protection, plan for possible relocation to a better-protected facility after the fallout has decreased—a process taking at least 12-24 hours for significant initial radiation reduction.
Limit Exposure: Avoid consuming food or water that may have been exposed to fallout. Use stored food and bottled water. If outside for any reason, cover your mouth with a mask or cloth and minimize skin exposure as much as possible.
Stay Indoors: Remain in the sheltered location until authorities declare it safe to leave. Unnecessary exposure increases the risk of radiation sickness.
Remain Calm and Coordinated: Keep communication with family members and support networks, ensuring you have an action plan that everyone knows and understands.
Monitor Health: Be aware of symptoms of radiation sickness and seek medical help immediately if symptoms appear, such as nausea, weakness, and skin burns.

By following these steps, I would aim to protect myself and optimize my chances of safety during such a catastrophic event.
