The origin of time is closely related to the origins of the universe, as currently understood by modern physics. According to the prevalent cosmological model, our universe began approximately 13.8 billion years ago with the Big Bang, a singularity event where all space, time, and matter were created. Prior to the Big Bang, the concept of “time” as we understand it did not exist because the conventional framework in which time is perceived—based on the theory of relativity—is inherently linked to the fabric of space-time, which emerged from this primordial event.

In Einstein’s theory of general relativity, time is not separate from space; rather, they are interconnected, forming the four-dimensional construct known as space-time. This means that with the advent of the Big Bang, space and time were brought into being simultaneously. Thus, asking what happened “before” the Big Bang may not be meaningful in the traditional sense since time itself was not present to provide a context or a sequence of events as we comprehend them.

The Big Bang theory accounts for the expansion of the universe from an extremely hot and dense initial state, but does not explicitly elucidate the cause of the singularity nor why it occurred. Some theoretical physicists have conjectured about what might precede the Big Bang or how the universe’s expansion might fit into a more extensive multiverse scenario, though such ideas remain speculative without empirical evidence.

Further exploration into quantum mechanics, cosmology, and advancements in theoretical physics may provide deeper insights into the nature and origins of time, but as it stands, our understanding remains rooted in the idea that time as a dimensional construct emerged alongside the universe in the first moments after the Big Bang.
