During the early years of my career, I was working for a rapidly growing tech startup. The company had secured a substantial round of funding, and it was expanding aggressively. While the excitement and growth opportunities were invigorating, I noticed some internal misalignments – specifically, a lack of cohesive leadership and communication among departments. Despite the warning signs, I was offered a promotion to a managerial position that would have tied me more closely to the company’s long-term strategy. I was tempted by the prospect but ultimately decided to decline the promotion and accepted a position at another company that had a more stable structure and a clear vision.

A year later, the startup began experiencing significant problems, primarily due to its unsustainable scaling attempts and lack of strategic clarity. It went through several rounds of layoffs, and eventually, the company was acquired in a less favorable deal for the employees. Reflecting back, not accepting the promotion allowed me to avoid being part of a turbulent period that could have potentially hindered my professional growth and stability. This experience taught me to recognize and heed early warning signs of instability within a company, prioritizing sustainable growth and clear leadership over short-term gains.
