Did you know that lobsters do not biologically age in the way most creatures do? Unlike humans and many other animals, lobsters have a unique genetic arrangement that allows them to potentially live indefinitely, barring disease or injury. This biological quirk is primarily due to the enzyme telomerase, which repairs their DNA sequences known as telomeres, preventing them from wearing down over time and thus avoiding the standard aging process. As a result, lobsters can continue to grow larger and more fertile as they age. They don’t experience the cellular deterioration that typically marks aging in other species. In fact, the limiting factor in the lifespan of a lobster often comes down to the energy required to molt; eventually, they may become too tired or unable to molt, leading to vulnerability to disease or inability to escape predators, rather than dying of old age. This fascinating aspect of lobster biology often seems too strange to be true, yet it is a well-documented phenomenon in marine biology.
